DC x Kendo Double Label Retailer Project: The Spruce Kendo

It's finally ladies' night in Sneaker Land.

After some exciting men's sneaker collaborations (which some of you ladies with larger feet got to enjoy), DC Shoes is giving female kicksaholics a treat with the DC Shoes x Kendo Double Label Retailer Project "Spruce Kendo" sneaker.

The first women's sneaker in DC's Double Label Retailer Project, the "Spruce Kendo," features reptile skins and leather in rich copper, bronze, gold, tan and brick red hues that shimmer in the light. Due to the lenticular technique used to apply the animal skins, the material has this gradient effect that makes it look  a bit different with every glance. The Kendo logo is featured on the heel and the insole, while a metallic accent on the side of the sneaker captured the DC logo.

The way these fabrics are manipulated so as to create an intriguing mosaic of textures and hues speaks to the concept Kendo was hoping to convey with this sneaker: the idea that women have versatile and ever-changing style needs and constantly evolving aesthetic sensibilities.

The Spruce Kendo is available starting tomorrow, April 1st, at Kendo-LA.com and Store.DCShoes.com as well as retail locations in Los Angeles and Soho.

A Different World: Origins Expands Its "Make A Difference" Line

The latest additions to the Origins "Make A Difference" collection, the Skin Rejuvenating Treatment Lotion and Ultra-Rich Rejuvenating Cream, both owe their replenishing power to a flower like no other: the Rose of Jericho.

A NEW TAKE ON SMOKEY EYES 

Who can't appreciate the seductive quality of smokey eyes? Contouring your lids with deep charcoal and slate grays, you can create an irrestible aura of mystery, then add hints of white, light gray and silver to complete the magnificent enigma.

This season, however, the smokey eye is modified a bit. Rather than sticking to the gray scale, makeup gurus are experimenting with grayish purples and pinks for a slightly less severe take on the look (check out Rock & Republic's Eye Colour Trio for some color ideas). Other makeup artists, on the other hand, are upping the drama factor by using thicker black eyeliner that they can diffuse and smudge as much (or as little) as they desire. It's no wonder why so many consumers are tossing their cluttersome eyeshadow brushes away! Bold as Lightning: DSquared2 Flash Pumps

There's something so exciting about lightning — it's bright, fast and, yes, it's dangerous. Watching those bolts of electricity surging through the sky on a stormy night, you'll feel both intrigued and frightened, aroused and intimidated. That pretty much sums up how I feel when I look at the dainty, sky-high heel on DSquared2's Flash Boots, Open Toe Pumps and Pumps.

As you'll note on the picture above, the elegant, modern shoe collection consists of three styles that all share a sharp, pointy, lightning-shaped heel. There's no way to look at these shoes and not be filled with a sense of awe but, at the same time, the idea of walking in these can give the bravest heel aficionado a case of vertigo. Life Is Like A Beach Chair in Cameron Hawaii

 

Spring seems to be procrastinating this year, making its entry on island time and hence leaving us to freeze our little (or ample) booties for longer than expected. But ladies, the season of blooming flowers really is right around the corner — and then, before you know it, we'll be basking in the glory of summer. Flocking to Christian Audigier's "Graceful Bird" Watch

 

I'll keep it all the way real with y'all — all those Ed Hardy and Christian Audigier baseball caps, T-shirts and sneakers just don't do it for me. Yes, I'm pretty thoroughly tatted up, and I can appreciate great artwork, but I suppose these inked-up designs went from being ubiquitous among young Hollywood types (think Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, etc.) to being a staple in every 'round-the-way girl's closet — and, after a while, the whole look started becoming passé (sort of like those Von Dutch trucker hats back in 2002-2003). And it certainly didn't help that every girl on Rock Of Love Bus, Real Chance of Love, and whatever other trashy reality TV show always seems to have at least one Ed Hardy or Christian Audigier hat or tee (I mean, nobody's trying to take style clues from girls with nicknames like "Daisy","Tila" "Cali", etc.). 

But, that being said, I'll still go for a nice accessory or timepiece by Christian Audigier — after all, these are still relatively under-the-radar pieces and the artwork features on them is a bit more subtle while still retaining that artful, rock 'n' roll edge that made the brand such a hit.

Check out this funky new Christian Audigier watch, which features a colorful exotic bird spreading its wings across the face of the watch — the artwork is magnificent, bursting with energy and liveliness. The bird design is encircled with white Swarovski crystals, positioned at each numeral on the face. The watch's bezel, meanwhile, features clustered clear Swarovski crystals and the rubber strap is a beautiful pale dove gray. 

This watch isn't for the birds, ladies — it's for the gazelles, ok?

Voulez Vous Acheter?: DC Shoes x agnès b. Sneakers

I'm always biggin' up DC Shoes because they consistently up the ante in regards to their creative output, their price points are very reasonable, their kicks are both stylish and functional, and their PR department is FANTASTIC (shout out to Ashley, Cristina, Sherrie-Anne and Ida — plus the brand's ambassadors never succomb to the elitist ways of other sneaker companies (**cough**NIKE!!**cough**). Sorry, had to put some folks on blast for a sec but back to bidness, as we like to say.

For its latest Double Label Series, DC Shoes teamed up with the ultra-cool, artist-friendly French brand agnès b. Using the streamlined silhouette of the DC Dress Sneaker, the head designers from each brand came together to create an elegant sneaker that could also double as a dress shoe. The DC x agnès b. sneakers don't deviate much from the Dress Sneaker silhouette — aside from the colorways, the main difference is the contrasting white heel (usually, the Dress Sneaker features only one color), the texture of the diagonal stripe along the aide bearing the DC logo, and the size of the perforations along the leather uppers (they appear to be smaller here). The stitching, sole, and form all pretty much remain unchanged.

The DC x agnès b. Double Label sneaker is available in three hues: Blue, Black and Sesame. I gotta admit, the blue one caught my eye right away (it's that Carolina blue shade I love so much), but then I really started yearning for the Sesame kicks (I know, it's unexpected coming from someone who loves color as much as me, but I just think there's something really classic and chic about that camel hue).

The low-top sneakers were already introduced in the Parisian agnès b. store on March 5th (during Paris Fashion Week) and are now making their way to New York City for their premiere at the agnès b. Soho shop on March 31st.

Pineapple Express: Slatkin & Co.'s New Figural Candles

Spongebob may live in a pineapple under the sea, but I bet you his abode smells like Crabby Patties and not some delicious tropical paradise. You, however, can aim to give your home a Caribbean vibe with these new pineapple-shaped figural candles from fragrance emporium Slatkin & Co.

The white ceramic, 5.5 oz. pineapple-shaped figural candle (pictured second from top) is filled with the new Island Nectar scent, a blend of tropical fruits, vanilla, rum and musk, and the cut-outs along the upper half make for a nice, Jack-o-Lantern-like glow. The second design, pictured at top, consists of a smaller, 3 oz., pineapple-shaped, open-top candle container, and is available in light pink or yellow. The yellow version is filled with the Island Nectar candle, while the pale pink style is filled with another new scent, Pineapple Orchid, which mixes pineapple, orchid and black currant notes for a fruity-floral mix.

Now, I have to admit, I haven't yet had a chance to smell these two new scents, but I'm very excited to do so because Slatkin & Co. has yet to disappoint me with its rich, layered, potent, and long-lasting candles and home fragrance systems.

And, while the pineapple-shaped figurals are definitely on the kitschy side, they're also a lot of fun! By A Very Thin Thread: Sun Maita Home Threader Kit

The first time I had my eyebrows threaded (before specialized salons started popping up all over the Village), I couldn't quite comprehend how the woman (a co-worker of a dear stylist friend) was managing to pluck out my eyebrow hairs using only a tiny thread wrapped around her teeny fingers. Even more baffling was how she managed to work that thread with the finesse someone would use when plucking at a harp's strings. She was quick and incredibly precise — more so than when I'd had my eyebrows waxed (often times, the wax dribbles onto a few extra hairs and they get pulled off too like innocent bystanders). So yes, my experiences with threading have always been positive.

But that doesn't mean I would ever (and I do mean EVER) have considered trying threading MYSELF! I mean, it takes me about 15 minutes just to get the tip of a sewing thread into the eye of a needle, so my hand-eye coordination leaves much to be desired. But when, a few weeks ago, I received Sun Maita's new Home Threader Kit, I felt emboldened and I figured, "Hey? What's the worst thing that can happen? If I can't make it work, I'll just go to the salon — no harm, no foul." Luckily, the idiot-friendly instructions made perfect sense to me and, before I knew it, I was a master threader (okay, I'm exaggerating — maybe more like a humble apprentice).

The hair removal system includes the following items: the Threader, 40 Organic Cotton Replacement Threads, Chalk (so you can more easily spot the hairs you want to remove and so that you'll have greater ease in doing so since the chalk absorbs any excess oil), an Instruction Booklet, Feel Less (a lightweight lotion that lightly numbs the skin to minimize any pain), and The Closer (which soothes the skin after you're done threading).

Setting up the threader is a cinch — you just twist off a thread from the brown refill frame and load it into the cartridge in a diagonal angle, then twist another thread from the white refill frame and loop it 4-5 times around the loaded white thread, securing both ends of the thread. You then apply the Feel Less lotion to the target area and, once it dries, you dab on some chalk. Once you've taken care of all these preliminaries, all you have to do is position the Threader so that the twisted area of the threads (where they form an X) lies right on top of the hair you wish to remove. You then press the trigger button on the Threader so as to capture the hairs and lightly lift the Threader off the skin, thereby removing the hair.

Now, I'll keep it all the way real with you — because you're covering small areas and doing a bit at a time, you're prolonging the pain (with waxing, it can hurt but it happens all at once, like pulling off a band-aid). The Feel Less lotion does help to minimize any discomfort or pain, but don't expect to be completely numb because of it. All that being said, the results, especially in the long term, are way better since threading minimizes hair follicles, helps to prevent ingrown hairs, reduces hair growth and coarseness, and doesn't inflame sensitive skin (which waxing can often do). 

The Sun Maita Threader Kit is wonderful for getting rid of any hairs above the lip, in between the brows (gotta make sure you're not rockin' a unibrow!), on the chin, or on any other desired area, but it's a bit tricky to use along the eyebrows — mostly because the device itself is so bulky that it's hard to see what you're doing (and there's no room for error when it comes to eyebrows!). But the brows is the only area that really requires some practice and skill; otherwise, any amateur can utilize this kit.

Plaid Madness: Big NIKE HI LE

The plaid trend we saw throughout the fall isn't going away anytime soon — and, I don't know about y'all, but I'm kind of happy about that! Of course, we want to see new interpretations and colorways but, when done the right way, plaid can be oh-so-fly.

Just check out this new Big Nike style, which is set to drop in April. For you sneaker lovers, the Big Nike draws from the Air Jordan and the classic Nike Dunk but, unlike the aforementioned styles, the Big Nike features a boxed "Nike" logo along the heel (Dunks don't generally feature any logos on the heel and Jordans feature a winged design).
