Tune Into Style With The Jeremy Scott for Adidas Originals TV Down Jacket

Remember how, back in the day, once a TV station's programming had concluded for the evening, all you'd see was thick strips of bold colors running vertically down the screen, atop a black block of color running horizontally along the bottom of the screen? You might still see that image from time to time but, for the most part, TV stations now run infomercials and paid programming whenever their very own original programming has wrapped. In the '80s and early '90s though, that multicolor screen was ubiquitous — in fact, it was incorporated into tons of ad campaigns, music videos, and more.

For his collection for Adidas Originals, designer Jeremy Scott created this puffy jacket, the TV Down Jacket, which captures that playful '80s aesthetic. Just last weekend, Gwen Stefani was spotted wearing it around Londontown while on a stroll with her son Kingston. Gwen seems to be loving Scott's work for Adidas — in previous weeks, she's been seen wearing the Superstar Peplum Jacket.

The TV Down Jacket provides a lot of coverage (it'll cover your waist, your rear, and your upper thigh area) and it features a hood with a double snap button closure. I love the way in which the coat was color blocked — how the strip along the middle of the jacket (which covers the buttons) features smaller, contrasting vertical blocks of color. Talk about "in living color"!

Holiday Gift Guide Part 10 -- For the Fly Girl With A Bit of Edge

Two days 'til Christmas! Feeling the pressure? Well, chill back, clear your head and remember that there's always something you can buy for that tricky person on your list — it's just a matter of careful research. Throughout the holiday season, Sicka's been featuring gift round-ups themed after iconic female characters — from Joan Holloway to Penny Lane, Aeon Flux, Lily Van Der Woodsen, Elle Woods, Cher Horowitz, Satine, Liz Lemon, and Elvira Hancock.

How Sweet It Is -- Essie Winter 2009 Collection

 

 

Essie got the sweet tooth for the holidays, offering fans a trio of colors inspired by seasonal treats. At top, you'll find Mint Candy Apple, a light, creamy color the shade of mint chocolate chip ice cream or pastel green Jordan Almonds. Next, there's Rock Candy, a very pale, ultra sheer version of the bubblegum pink color found in rock candy crystal sticks or cotton candy puffs. And finally, there's Lolipop, a vivid red hue like that found in the old-school cherry lollipops with the white smiley faces or in candied apples. 

Out of the three shades, Lolipop is my absolute favorite (and yes, Essie spelled it with one "l" in the middle, so don't get on my case about typos, m'kay?). It reminds me of Cherry Twizzlers, red gumdrops, and retro '60s-era dresses, shirts, and aprons in red with white polka dots — all things that make me smile. The Rock Candy is also a pretty color — especially if you prefer a subdued, natural look, It's the type of shade you could use on its own or which you could use as the foundation for a French manicure. It is, however, rather sheer (if you get any dirt under your fingernails, you'll be able to see it right away), and it takes a good three coats before there's any type of real coverage. Mint Candy Apple is perhaps the most distinctive shade in the bunch, but it also requires a daring, adventurous spirit. Personally, I found I couldn't really pull off the shade -- I don't think it works too well with my coloring. From far away, it looks great, but as you zoom in closer, it looks less and less flattering. But again, that's because of my coloring, so it could very well be that the shade would look phenomenal on someone else.

Holiday Gift Guide Part 9 -- For The Seductive, Retro-Loving Joan Holloway Type

Roger Sterling isn't the only one whose heart skips a beat at the sight of Joan Holloway (or Joan Harris, if we refer to the newlywed by her married name), the voluptuous redhead who efficiently ran the Sterling Cooper ad agency (well, until midway through Mad Men's third season, when she got hitched to a handsome doctor). Fortunately, those of you who tuned in for the Season 3 finale know Joan will once again keeping the advertising boys in check at their new upstart company — which should make for a really entertaining fourth season.

After all, Joan is more than eye candy for the boys and style inspiration for the girls:  she's discreet and capable of keeping mum about the most sordid personal affairs pertaining to her superiors; she rules the secretary pool with equal parts charm and venom; she's smart, focused, and determined (whether she's reading TV scripts to help Harry's newly formed broadcasting department or she's playing the role of devoted wife); and she's magnetizing — even when she's having a decidedly bitchy moment. Best of all, maybe now that she's working with Roger again on a day-to-day basis, the two will finally dump their loser spouses and get together (hey, a gal can dream, right?). If nothing else, we'll get to see Christina Hendricks strutting her stuff in her hip-hugging dressed and pencil skirts, snug sweaters, intricate updos, red fingernails, and signature pen necklace.

A good friend described MTV's "Run's House" as the modern-day, reality TV equivalent of The Cosby Show. And what else can you expect from the nieces of Phat Farm founder (and Def Jam Records co-founder) Russell Simmons? And lest we forget, their dad is part of the reason why hip-hop lovers so fervently embraced Adidas sneakers. For them to be fashion designers, then, wasn't that much of a stretch — and getting such an early start, well, that's a family tradition too.

Personally, while I've always admired the girls' resolve, I've tended to find their designs a bit too juvenile for women in their mid-to-late 20s and beyond. Really, it's more of a juniors' line — and, as such, it's adorable an entirely age appropriate, offering such pieces as vinyl handbags and backpacks with camo, plaid, and color blocked prints in contrasting neon hues; bold sneakers in colors worthy of a Barbie set; and hooded sweatsuits and tees with cupcake and ice cream cone graphics.

Every so often though, the Simmons sisters will create a pair of shoes or sneakers that speak to a more wide-ranging audience, one that that also encompasses a slightly older crowd. And the Sasha boots (pictured above) definitely exemplify footwear with mass appeal — from their cone-shaped heels to the heart print along the knit shaft, these boots will keep your feet warm and will add a dose of cuteness to any outfit.
