In their Spring 2012 collection, Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy recreated the painterly brush strokes of Vincent Van Gogh's most iconic pieces, working with a color palette that referenced the swirly blues of "Starry Night Over the Rhone" and "Cafe Terrace at Night" and incorporating vibrant blossoms like those in his "Four Cut Sunflowers" and Irises" masterpieces.
The "Starry Night" influence was evident in the smokey eye look created, which involved various tones of midnight blue. Makeup artist James Kaliardos commandeered the NARS Cosmetics team backstage at the Rodarte Spring 2012 presentation, creating the smoldering eye look and complementing it with a soft lavender lip.
To give the models a flawless complexion, Kaliardos applied the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, which is poised to hit counter in Spring 2012, and then softly highlighted cheekbones with the NARS Penny Lane Cream Blush, a very natural nude pink hue.
For the eye look, Kaliardos used the Dark Softt Touch Shadow Pencil (launching in Spring 2012), a royal blue shade akin to the Rue Saint Honore Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner. After applying the liner to the upper and lower lashlines, he then layered the Night Flight Single Eyeshadow, a black with cobalt blue pearl particles, and the Tropic Single Eyeshadow, a matte teal with glittery silver particles, blending them together to create a gradated look. Last, he used the light almond-colored Rue Bonaparte Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner along outer corners to blend in and diffuse the darker shades and along the inner corners to open up an illuminate the eye.
On lips, Kaliardos blended the nude Penny Lane Cream Blush, the lavender-y shimmering opal Pearl Beach Cream Eyeshadow, and the Nana Lip Gloss, a deep black gray. Together, these products created a lip look with a creamy finish and a cool, lavender-tinged, nude pink shade.
