While Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City was relocated from the Bryant Park tents to Lincoln Center in Fall 2010, the change in venues hasn't altered the event's DNA. Whether the Fashion Week hub is located at Midtown East or the Upper West Side, those in attendance will attest to the scenario remaining unchanged in at least one way: the fashion shows aren't staged exclusively inside the storied venues. Every stylist, editor, buyer, writer, and blogger scurrying from one show to the next is staging his or her own performance, hoping to turn heads, inspire some awe-struck cooing, and lure one of the shutterbugs lurching outside. The attention-grabbing antics can often border on ridiculous — take, for instance, a black-haired twenty-something guy with ripped black mesh tied over his eyes to create a grunge-y Zorro look, the words "Long Live McQueen" scrawled on his cheek with black liner, or consider the sisters in the paint splatter-covered white jumpsuits and the Flock of Seagulls-inspired, bleached blond 'dos.
But, for every limelight-starved wannabe, there is a true fashion reveler, someone who simply loves having the opportunity to strut in his or her favorite threads and showcase his or her own personal style. This is precisely the type of spirit I embrace — not just during Fashion Week, but every single day. I consider fashion a conduit towards personal expression, and I approach every outfit with that same stance, thinking, "How do I feel today? What is it that I want to express?"
On September 12th, as I made my way to some shows at Lincoln Center, I was stopped by Jennifer Chan of Tyra Banks' new fashion, beauty and lifestyle website TypeF.com and asked about my look for the day: a Bohemian-flavored ensemble consisting of a hip-hugging taupe maxi skirt from My Tribe; a loose-fitting, tan-colored, short-sleeved Greylin blouse with a coral orange geometric print; Rosegold's tan Layla Platform Sandals, which feature a flirtatious peep toe and diamond-shaped cut-outs; and an Isabelle Fiore orange purse with floral embroidery. Since I'm huge on accessories, I infused a funky twist into my look via my choice of jewelry: from a pair of groovy House of Harlow 1960 Leather Tribal Earrings in orange to the 14-piece Amrita Singh Selena Bangle Set, a grooved Lia Sophia ring, and an oversize, brass-toned H&M ring with a domed orange stone.
