You'll be saying, "Mirror, Mirror" way before Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsmen with this  glass mirror, which resembles Superman's Fortress of Solitude with the three layers of faceted, pointed, stalagmite-like glass slices surrounding the rectangular-shaped mirror at the center. Measuring 37" by 52", this sunburst-flavored piece will practically beckon you to stare at your reflection.

Nothing quite says Art Deco like the combination of glossy black and gleaming silver or gold.  These earrings capture that aesthetic perfectly with elongated, teardrop-shaped onyx stones, capped with 14k white gold. The drop earrings dangle from earlobes by 14K gold fish hook closures adorned with diamonds along their rounded curves and featuring dainty, diamond-embellished chain strands between the closures and the onyx drops .

As if the contrast of black and mirrored gold Nappa leather weren't enough to make Art Deco fanatics salivate, public-relations-expert-turned-footwear-designer Gio Metodiev added a sculptural, futuristic quality to his Phoenix shoe via mountain-shaped cut-outs along the sides and, most importantly, a trio of leather straps fanning out at the top of the shoe in an accordion-like manner. The pointed toe and straight heel, meanwhile, balance out the more rounded design elements. You can pick between a glossy black leather number with mirrored gold leather details or a soft gold shoe with black leather details — either way, you'll be attaining style immortality.

This boxy, Italian stainless steel clutch measures 4.25" in height, 7" in width, and 1.5" in depth, and it has a silver, mirrored sheen that makes it look glamorous without being ostentatious. The square closure at the top of the clutch is engraved with the JM logo, adding a nice detail to the otherwise minimalist design.

True to her vintage-influenced aesthetic, Lulu Frost designer Lisa Salzer created this rounded bangle for her limited-edition, affordable jewelry line for J.Crew. The glossy black resin bangle measures 2 1/2" in diameter and features a gold-plated, brass buckle-like accent at the center, with a rectangular, faceted, smokey quartz-like center stone housed in the metal detail's interior. The stone's gold-plated frame is further embellished by handle-like strips along along the length, at the top and bottom of the stone, and arc-like details along its sides  — all encrusted with pavé-set Czech crystals.

Dorothy would've chucked her ruby red slippers had she seen these bow-accented, mosaic-style, mirrored gold flats from Salvatore Ferragamo, which feature a sensible 3/8" heel and rounded toe.

 

Kilian "Night Jewels" Collection, $425 for one bottle filled with any scent from the L'Oeuvre Noire or Arabian Nights collection. Available at RonRobinson.com

Fragrance expert Kilian Hennessy titled his Holiday 2011 collection “Joyaux de Nuit” (“Night Jewels”) after the four jeweled bottle designs he envisioned, all of which are meant to capture the black of night and the sparkle of the lights and stars during the evening hours.

Three of the four bottles were inspired by the L'Oeuvre Noir fragrance family: a heart split in two by a silver strip lined with rectangular smoky crystal stones and round clear crystals captures the heartache associated with "Love and its Prohibitions;" a shifting, distorted version of the square shape of the Place Vendôme in Paris channels the regal quality of "The Temptations" scent; and a futuristic design consisting of two staggered semi-circles facing one another, then adorned with vertical strips of faceted jewels resembling tower formations, captures the naughty, salacious spirit of "The Artificial Paradises" scent. The final bottle deviates aesthetically from the others by incorporating gold accents and Swarovski crystals, all of which are meant to capture the opulent spirit of the Arabian Nights fragrance collection.

All of the handcrafted bottles are refillable, making them timeless treasures worthy of the most extravagant boudoir. 

The Sorcerer's Apprentice --Disney Vault 28 Villains Maleficent Vinylmation Figure By Noah

Though Hollywood caught Snow White fever (as evidenced by the simultaneous filming of the fantastical, cinematically impressiveSnow White and the Huntsmen, starring Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen and Kristen Stewart as Snow White, and the campier, less sophisticated Mirror Mirror, starring Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen), Sleeping Beauty still ranks first in my list of Disney tales. And, as far as Disney villains go, none has been quite as sinister and bone-chillingly frightening as Maleficent, with her bat-like appearance, her greenish skin, the ram-like horns atop her head, her dramatic purple-and-black-robe, her pet raven, and that wretched, spell-casting staff with the electrically-charged green orb at the tip.

For the Vault 28 Villains Collection by Noah, incorporating the most malicious characters in Disney history, the evil fairy is represented as a fire-breathing dragon. The base of the design, as with all the Vinylmation offerings, is the original Mickey Mouse vinyl collectible figure from the Disney Theme Parks.

The Disney Vault 28 Villains Maleficent Vinylmation Figure by Noah ($650 at DisneyStore.com) stands at 9 inches tall and features a dark, ominous, purplish blue iris base coat with a metallic, asphalt-like finish inspired by the colors of Maleficent's garb. Orange County-bred artist Noah channeled Maleficent's essence by hand-painting acid green flames along the body of the Mickey Mouse figure, stretching upwards to the head and all the way to the rounded ears.

The poseable figure's head, meanwhile, features a fire-breathing dragon with an incandescent yellow tongue, eyes, and nostrils. The dragon motif is, of course, a reference to the menacing form into which Maleficent shape-shifts at the climax of the film. 

Each Maleficent Vinylmation figure was painted by hand so that no two are alike, and only a limited number were created, making this a fantastic investment for art collectors and Disney fanatics alike. 

 

Best Coast(ers) -- Out of Print Introduces New Coaster Sets

 

 

Like any modern gal, I have a love-hate relationship with technology. I can't imagine riding the subway without my iPod tucked inside my pocket, delivering sweet tunes to my ears but, at the same time, I still haven't been able to chuck my extensive collection of CDs and mixtapes — even though I've imported many of them into my digital music library. Part of my desire to cling to these CDs stems from my fascination with their sleeves, with the composition of the photographs, the typography, and the illustrations adorning these glossy pamphlets, not to mention the careful annotations and acknowledgements typed on their pages. 

Whereas my feelings regarding technology and musical mediums waiver, when it comes to books, I'm still a traditionalist. I savor the smell of old books, the tranquility of libraries, the majestic stature of wooden bookshelves lined with rare titles, the rustling sound of turning pages, the creases left behind by dog-earing, the water and coffee stains on paper pages lovingly pored over by avid readers, and the yellowish tint of weathered paper. And, of course, there's the matter of book covers -- how they can capture the spirit of a novel, the aesthetic sensibilities of an era or genre, or even the author's spirit. 

With classic titles that have been reprinted over and over, sometimes the original book art fades into obscurity, replaced by more ordinary fare. Luckily, the founders of Out of Print, a clothing and accessories line, share my romanticism regarding classic literature. Since 2010, then, they've been designing tees and sweatshirts bearing the hard-to-find artwork that appeared on the first editions of such groundbreaking novels as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Joseph Heller's Catch-22, Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, and many more.

Now, Out of Print is not only expanding its array of book cover art, but it's also finding new canvases on which to emblazon these historical works. Aside from clothing, then, Out of Print is now offering bibliophiles tote bags, phone cases, eReader jackets (for those of you who love the convenience of digital readers but still appreciate the magic of the printed word) and, as of this week, coasters.

The new Out of Print Coaster Set, available for $20 at OutofPrintClothing.com starting this week, contains eight waterproof coasters, each featuring the graphics of a classic book. Packed in a square, hardcover-style, cornflower blue case, the eight coasters in the set feature artwork from the following titles: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Heller's Catch-22, Alduous Huxley's Brave New World, Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, and Jack Kerouak's On the Road.

Ligorano/Reese Shake Things Up With New "The History of Art" Snow Globes

 

 

A premature snowstorm left the East Coast blanketed in white frost this past weekend, only two days before candy-seeking trick-or-treaters were poised to visit their neighbors carrying pumpkin-shaped baskets. The first snowfall of the year may foretell a harsh and lengthy winter but, while the plump flakes floated in the sky on Saturday, many of us marveled at the magical view with the type of wide-eyed fascination you'd expect from a child who, after years of experiencing snow only via domed crystal globes, finally felt some real flakes falling on his nose.

In their latest endeavor, Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese of Ligorano/Reese have redefined the meaning of the snow globe, a symbol of Christmas joy and childlike wonderment, by manipulating the images within these transparent spheres. In their heavily conceptual The History of Art Snow Globes collection, Ligorano and Reese celebrate the most groundbreaking art periods in history, using the snow globe as a medium through which to celebrate a specific aesthetic associated with one of these movements. Instead of a depiction of Santa Claus at the North Pole, each snow globe houses the name of an art movement. The placement and color of these laser-cut acrylic letters, along with the font style used, work to convey the main aesthetic principles of that art period. 

The collection consists of twenty snow globes, each measuring 7 1/2" in height and 6" in diameter, signed and dated, and retailing for $400 a pop at ArtwareEditions.com. The twenty movements mentioned in the collection are: Abstract Expressionism, Bauhaus, Conceptual Art, Cubism, Dada, De Stijl, Expressionism,
Fauvism, Fluxus, Futurism, Minimalism, New Media, Op Art, Performance Art, Photo Realism, Pop Art, Superflat, Surrealism, Video Art, and YBA.

The Cubism Snow Globe pictured above, for example, features square, 3-dimensional, black-and-white letters arranged in an abstract manner as opposed to running along one straight line. Likewise, the Surrealism Snow Globe features light aqua letters suspended along the center of the globe, the font size increasing as one's gaze moves from left to right, so that the final result feels dreamlike and fantastical. The Video Art Snow Globe even features letters inside a plasma-like blue screen.

By manipulating font styles and dimensions, Ligorano/Reese capture the DNA of each art movement and, by communicating their visions via snow globes, they make each object feel all the more precious and, in so doing, amplify the magnificence of the art period it encapsulates.

Let It Rain With A Color-Changing Squidarella By SquidLondon Umbrella

 

Every gal who has survived adolescence can remember a period when she was fascinated by mood rings, when she waited eagerly to see if their stones would change from an eerie, galactic, alien-esque green to a neon, Tron-worthy turquoise or a fiery red — a transformation that, promotional charts notwithstanding, depended solely on body temperature fluctuations. But what fascinated us wasn't necessarily the reason behind the color change — it was the transformation itself that proved exciting (and the surprise element of not knowing when it would do so).

Now, you can experience this sense of rapture once again — without adopting a gecko or sporting jewelry that looks like it came from a plastic egg in a supermarket vending machine. In addition to its own original handbag, scarf, and apparel designs, Hayden-Harnett is offering hand-picked goods from some brands like SquidLondon, which specializes in color-changing graphic umbrellas.

As you might discern from the pattern's name, the Bird Splash is a humorous take on the mess created when winged creatures, uhm, relieve themselves on windshields, window panes, shoulders, rooftops, and canopies. When soaked in moisture, the white splotches take on a technicolor feel, with each blotchy, spidery stain appearing like it consists of two or three juxtaposed smears in harmonizing hues: a sky blue over a Play-Doh green, an electric blue atop a pale blue over a sunshine yellow, and a creamy tangerine over a peony pink.

With these Squidarellas, you'll be setting fire to the rain, blazing through the stormy skies.

 

Strange Days -- Mimoco and Cosmic Debris Unveil Emily the Strange Mimobots

 

 

 

What's stranger than fiction? An all-too-real USB flash drive resembling a strange but lovable fictional character: Emily the Strange.

Created by Rob Reger in 1993, Emily stands in stark contrast to the dominant images of perennially skirt-clad, pink-loving, giggly young girls with weekly ballet classes and bedrooms plastered with posters of crush-worthy teenybopper male singers. Instead of fuzzy bunnies and cuddly puppies, this 13-year-old favors the independent spirit of her four slightly spooky black cats. This strong-minded teen could care less about trends, which is why, instead of shopping for accessories at Claire's, she wears a no-fuss black dress. Like MTV's Daria character, Emily harbors a no-nonsense attitude, but she also adapts better to social environments, so that she's free of the jaded attitude that's so firmly entrenched into Daria's psyche.

Now thanks to a collaboration between Mimoco and Cosmic Debris, fans of the bang-rocking, conformity-bucking character can get their hands on one of the two USB flash drives made in her image. The co-branded Emily the Strange MIMOBOT series consists of two bold designs: “People Are Strange" and ”Save Yourself," each of which retails for $22.95 at Mimoco.com.

The Emily the Strange "People Are Strange" Mimobot celebrates quirkiness and individuality while nodding to the poster art style of the late 1960s and early 1970s with lightning-like, white zig-zags accentuating her blunt bangs, dramatic swooshes to give her black mane movement, and rounded, Jefferson Airplane-ish red letters spelling "Emily" along the bottom of the flash drive and stating "People Are Strange" along the back. 

For a more tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the character, Mimoco also created the Emily the Strange "Save Yourself" Mimobot, which depicts her as a superhero-in-the-making, donning a Robin-worthy, feline-flavored red mask and a makeshift red cape with an illustration of a black cat along the back, which itself features jagged seams. To finish the masked avenger effect, Emily's forehead features a white bat-like shape — perhaps her own call to action. 

Both of these Mimobots come pre-loaded with an Emily the Strange e-book and themed wallpapers, icons, and avatars.

 

Artware Editions Presents Two New Swatch Watches By Markus Linnenbrink

 

Brooklyn-based German artist Markus Linnenbrink specializes in paintings that evoke a sense of controlled chaos by creating rows of colorful, deliberately imperfect, drip-like lines using watercolors, pigment-enriched hot wax, and epoxy resins on wood surfaces, Arches paper, and Chromogenic color print photographs. To toast Linnenbrink's first solo exhibition at Tomlinson Kong Contemporary, New York City-based design store Artware Editions is offering two new Swatch watches designed by Linnenbrink. 

Both watches effectively capture Linnenbrink's signature aesthetic, serving as wearable art pieces rather than trend-based accessories or strictly functional time pieces.

The WE'REALLGONNADIE(FOR RON) watch ($80 at ArtwareEditions.com features a metallic gold face and matching case with a surreal-looking human skull at the face's center seemingly oozing drips of color, its nasal bone and orbital bone left obscured and shadowy. The strap, meanwhile, features swirls of blood red, midnight blue, and marigold yellow color. The second design, the TIMEISNEVERTIMEENOUGH Swatch ($70 at ArtwareEditions.com) features a black backdrop and black round face, both covered with drip-like lines of color running horizontally along the length of the entire piece. Along the right-hand side of the face and band, meanwhile, you'll find a scalloped black line meant to resemble the bottom edges of Linnenbrink's Photodrip paintings.

These limited-edition watches perfectly capture Linnenbrink's artistic style while also conveying messages about human beings' mortality and the need to be present and engaged in every single moment of one's life. 

 

Kidrobot For Swatch Collection -- Watches And Dunnies For Honeys

Synchronize your Swatches, ladies! With the new Kidrobot for Swatch collection, you'll be on more of a winning streak than Parker Lewis himself. The limited-edition collection consists of eight vinyl watches, each designed by an artist, illustrator, graffiti writer, or graphic designer within the Kidrobot family. Among the featured artists, then, you'll find such recognizable names as Frank Kozik and Tristan Eaton, along with other cult favorites like Kansas-based illustrator MAD, French graffiti icon Tilt, and New York-based designer SSUR.

Each vivacious timepiece comes with the 3-inch Dunny figure that served as the corresponding artist's inspiration. Take, for example, the Kidrobot for Swatch Shout Out 3-Inch Dunny Set ($70 at Kidrobot.com), designed by MAD, which features a bright pink watch with a screaming face and a lovable matching Dunny. In this piece, the genius is in the details. The Dunny's bright pink body is covered with playful illustrations in white -- from tiny stars to ice cream cones on his rabbit-like ears -- while his face is completely covered by black oval shape meant to resemble the dark inside of an open mouth, with a blue tongue sticking out and white pearly teeth framing the shape. The Swatch design mirrors the concept, with the screaming face integrated into the watch's round face. What is there to scream about? We're thinking ice cream!

Our personal fave, though, is the camo-dipped Kidrobot for Swatch Tic Tic Boom 3-Inch Dunny Set ($70 at Kidrobot.com) by Russian-born, New York-based artist and designer SSUR (pictured in detail after the jump). The Dunny's combat-ready stance says it all -- this little guy is a warrior, and he's ready to put up quite the fight with a collage of US Woodland, Jungle Digital, and Sandy Desert camo patterns covering his body. The matching watch features a green camo band and watch case, along with a red face with the outline of Che Guevara in black and the words "You Are Here" printed in yellow at the center.

For a whimsical option that marries street art and the color schemes of a delicious candy necklace, check out the Kidrobot for Swatch Love Song 3-Inch Dunny Set ($70 at Kidrobot.com) by French spray can artist Tilt. The Dunny figure features lyrics of love in bubble letters circling his body while, on the watch, the lyrics run in concentric circles along the face of the watch, running into the band area.  

Another favorite: the Kidrobot for Swatch The So Far Away 3-Inch Dunny Set ($70 at Kidrobot.com) Tby Australian artist Jeremyville. For the Dunny, Jeremyville created a new character named Ibbity Pop, a bunny-like critter with wide eyes encircled in bubblegum pink, a bulbous nose, and strong black lines meant to resemble fur along his body and forehead. The accompanying Swatch features Ibbity Pop's face on the dial and long black lines covering the band.

Each set features the artist's signature printed on the watch band and comes in a clear box so you can display your piece proudly.

 

 

Case-Mate Jessica Swift Collection of iPhone 4 Cases -- From Flowers to Feathers and Kaleidoscopes

 

 

This revelation may prompt some gasps, but I'm not an iPhone user. I know, I know: you can make video calls and actually look at the person you're dialing, the 5-megapixel camera takes high quality photos that can be displayed via nifty slide shows, the touch screen is so handy, and it's just a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious device altogether. But, truth be told, I'm still faithful to my good old Blackberry, especially since I find the touchscreen keypad on the iPhone really inconvenient (I prefer actual keys) and I primarily use my mobile to type e-mails, send text messages, and tweet .

Still, on the style front, there's no denying that the iPhone is a much sleeker device. Add to that the many cases designed to jazz up these mobile devices, and the urge to make the Blackberry-to-iPhone switch burns that much more vigorously. My latest source of temptation: the Case-Mate Jessica Swift collection of custom-designed iPhone 4 cases ($34.95 each at Case-Mate.com).

Jessica Swift —an illustrator, painter, surface pattern maker, and artist — designs original patterns for everything from stationery to calendars, notebooks, pocket mirrors, coasters, and screen prints (check out the goodies at her Etsy store). And now, she's bringing her vibrant patterns to the tech-savvy masses through a collaboration with Case-Mate. 

There are sixteen iPhone 4 case signs in the collection — among them, the Peacock Feathers case, which features chartreuse and purple plumage dancing atop a deep teal backdrop; the Banana Magnolia case, which features a soft lilac backdrop covered with peach, banana yellow, and coral blossoms; the Deemah design, which features a kaleidoscopic print with geometric shapes that repeat over and over along the case's surface; and the Masoud, a blush pink case with interlocking shapes in soft honeysuckle, pale peach, gray, and violet tones that form star-like shapes when they come together.
