Virgins Saints & Angels' "The Kardashian Collection" Launches Today!

 

 

   

Back in 2005, I covered the Mexico-based line Virgins Saints & Angels for the New York Post (and, complete disclaimer here: we worked for the "Tempo" section, a Latino culture, entertainment and lifestyle insert, and hence had nothing to do with the rest of the newspaper's conservative shenanigans). Back then, VSA's offerings mainly consisted of jeweled, antique-looking belt buckles and rosary necklaces inspired by Spanish colonial era aesthetic norms. A couple of years later, while at VIBE, I again had the chance to cover Virgins Saints & Angels — even better, I met the owner and designer Cheryl Finnegan, who made me so proud of my Latino heritage as she enthusiastically spoke of her heartfelt fascination with Latin American culture, architecture, and symbolism. I loved her belief that we all have goddesses or divine beings from whom we can draw inspiration. The images of deities from various religions incorporated into her designs, then, have more of an allegorical than a literal significance (and yet they're used with the utmost respect and reverence).

Since then, I've seen Finnegan's line flourish, expanding to include a full range of jewelry pieces that capture the line's slightly gothic, at times Byzantine, and always vintage feel.  And I'm beyond excited to see each new collection since  VSA never disappoints.

The line's latest collection is a collaboration with Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian. Launching today at Kitson, the Kardashian Collection by Virgins Saints & Angels, features such stunning pieces as the above-pictured spiked cuff, which boasts isosceles triangle shapes, all transformed into three-dimensional pyramid shapes with faceted edges and arrow-like details along their bases. These pyramid-like shapes, meanwhile, are arranged so that their bases face the center of the bracelet, with the spikes facing outward. At the center, meanwhile, you'll find a row of round crystalline stones. One of my favorite details, however, is the granulated metal connecting the spikes in an accordion-like fashion — I love the texture created by the granulation, how it resembles stingray skin. Looking at the cuff is like staring at an artistic interpretation of the Burgos Cathedral in Spain. 

Another fantastically ornate piece is the ring (pictured second from top), which features gorgeous, swooping swirl designs along the outer edge of each leg, a green center stone with granulated details surrounding it, and a trio of smaller green stones along the center of each leg. Paris Hilton hardly ranks among my style icons (for me, she personifies all the reasons why wealth and taste do not necessarily go hand-in-hand), but I must admit that, every so often, the bubble-headed heiress gets a few things right. For example, during a recent trip to West Hollywood boutique Live! On Sunset, Hilton dropped a whopping $23,000 (yes, that's some people's yearly salary!) and, among the pieces she purchased, were four necklaces from 3-year-old jewelry brand Jayrun.

Founded by Los Angeles-bred sisters Jayrun and Terme Hayempour, Jayrun specializes in natural stones and dainty, feminine, gold-plated chain designs. The Jayrun "Summer Romance" collection, for instance, incorporates Bohemian-flavored pieces with colorful stones in turquoise, violet, fuchsia, jade green, dark purple, and strawberry red hues (some stones are naturally colorful, while others are dyed to receive the desired vibrant shade).  I'm particularly fond of the teardrop-shaped "Chloe" earrings (pictured at top), which feature smooth, domed violet stones with a swirling, slightly psychedelic finish reminiscent of an oil slick. The "Ava" earrings (pictured third from top), meanwhile, constitute a daintier option, with their faceted, incandescent strawberry red quartz tones. These 1"-long drop earrings feature a 14k gold setting with leaf-like details at the very top of each stone.

If you're going for a free-spirited tropical vibe, check out the "Harlow" turquoise bracelet (pictured second from top), which features a vivid turquoise stone and three dangling 14k gold filled chain strands with interlocking rectangular shapes. The "Penelope" bracelet (pictured below), meanwhile, represents a slight variation of the "Harlow" bracelet, incorporating an oversize chalcedony stone dyed an '80s-ready fuchsia color, as opposed to a turquoise stone.

Want to take the gypsy look to new heights? Then consider the "Juliette" necklace, which features an elongated oval chalcedony stone dyed a lime green color and a dangling tassel detail.

Alice + Olivia Collaborates With Erickson Beamon And Keds

Fashion designer Stacey Bendet Eisner, founder of Alice + Olivia, clearly believes in teamwork. She has collaborated with Payless Shoesource for several seasons now, bringing her colorful and funky aesthetic to the affordable footwear retailer. And within the past month, she's unveiled two new collaborations: a jewelry line designed by Erickson Beamon for Alice + Olivia, and a collection of shimmering sequined sneakers for Keds. Here's a look at the two new collaborative efforts, which both remind us of why there's a "+" symbol in the Alice + Olivia brand name — hey, 1 is the loneliest number, right?

On May 1st, Alice + Olivia debuted its new collection of sneakers for Keds, available at Neiman Marcus stores. When I first heard that retired supermodel Cindy Crawford had launched a jewelry line for JCPenney, I did some major eye rolling — particularly when I caught wind of its name, One Kiss (it sounded a bit too "We Are The World"-ish for me, I suppose). But, in that typical don't-judge-a-book-by-its-cover (or its name or celebrity designer/figurehead) manner, I actually spotted quite a few innovative, inspiring pieces in Crawford's debut collection. Among them were these sterling silver earrings, which feature a center iolite stone with a 0.38cw, as well as tiny diamond accents. I'm particularly fascinated by the Moroccan-inspired shape of these earrings, which give them an exotic and slightly Bohemian feel.

Elva Fields Jewelry — A Fashion Field Of Dreams

 

 

 

Though jewelry designer Emily Wheat Maynard launched her line Elva Fields back in 2003, I'm only now becoming acquainted with her work (yes, I'm beyond tardy to the party!). Named after Maynard's great-grandmother, Elva Fields offers distinctive, statement-making jewelry imbued with a vintage vibe, so that each piece feels like a rare treasure that was passed down from one generation to the next. The brand encompasses three lines: Elva, which consists of dramatic, one-of-a-kind necklaces; June, which features free-spirited dangle earrings (many featuring small faceted beads and stones); and Deb, which features pieces made exclusively from vintage materials.

Out of the three lines, the Elva features the greatest number of showstoppers (just look at the four necklaces pictured above!).  Each necklace incorporates a mix of old and new materials, with vintage earrings, brooches, pendants, and belt buckles taking center stage. Based in Kentucky. Maynard regularly travels to antique shops, flea markets, and vintage stores all over the nation in search of these majestic vintage pieces. I love the way she breathes new life into these found items, how each necklace manages to strike a balance between modernity and antiquity, between retro and contemporary. This is the type of jewelry I imagine would make vintage-loving vixen Zooey Deschanel swoon.

Take, for example, the "Against A Sky Blue" necklace (pictured third from top), which features a domed brooch encrusted with clear crystalline stones and opal white stones with gunmetal-colored settings, placed along the side of two strands of cobalt blue beads. The "In Peace" necklace, meanwhile, features Granny Smith apple green quartz beads in perfectly shaped gumball-esque spheres decorated with vintage brooches and earrings that date back to the '50s and '60s. The floral brooch detail is particularly charming, giving this necklace a hint of spring fever. Perhaps my favorite piece thus far is the "Dreams Unfold" necklace, which features three strands of coin-shaped black crystal stones with faceted and slightly ridged surfaces that magnify their reflective sheen — and, of course, there's that stunning vintage butterfly brooch, which features pale yellow enamel along the body of the butterfly and burnt orange, celadon, and citrine yellow stones and crystal accents along the wings. The butterfly's warm citrus tones pop against the obsidian black strands, creating an element of surprise and excitement, like fireworks in a midnight blue sky.

A few months ago, I went to a press preview where they were showcasing some pieces from San Francisco-bred, New York-based jewelry designer Page Sargisson. The folksy, antique-y vibe of the pieces in her "Casino Chic" collection instantly caught my eye, but my what was particularly memorable was the story behind the collection. Each of the pendants in the "Casino Chic" collection is made from an antique casino chip Sargisson collected during her many travels. If you thought all poker chips had round, wafer-like shapes, with striped details along their ridges, well. think again. Sargisson's jewelry line features vibrant, showstopping gambling tokens — from the thin, rectangular shape and boisterous magenta color of the vintage "Magenta Del Estado" mother-of-pearl casino chip (pictured above) to the bold black numbering and soft carnation hue of the "Pink 20 Casino Chip" mother-of-pearl poker chip (pictured second from top). How's that for recycling at it's best?

Just because a company insists on using all-natural ingredients, that doesn't necessarily mean it abides by such strict standards when it comes to its products' packaging. That's where ONE Bath & Body to come in — in addition to manufacturing all-natural. cruelty-free skincare products, the brand ensures that its goods are packaged using recyclable tin cans and/or cardboard cartons and sleeves. I'd recommend checking out the Natural Body Butters — I tried the Cherry Blossom Trails one and loved how soft and smooth my skin felt thanks to the combination of mango seed butter, sweet almond oil, and glycerin. Plus, the body butter has a nice yogurt-like consistency, so that it's not too thick and blubbery (as many other body creams tend to be), and your skin readily absorbs the nutrients in the formula for a non-greasy effect.

The changing winter-to-spring weather can wreak havoc on skin. But the most amazing product in the eco-friendly home ambiance collection (at least from what we've tried so far) is the Hand Care Set pictured above, which consists of a Hand Soap and Hand Lotion, both with handy pump applicators, packaged in a bulk-free stainless steel caddy. The lotion is particularly yummy, since it features shea butter, olive oil, sunflower oil, and soybean oil to nourish, moisturize, and soften hands. The scent, meanwhile, is unique and enchanting thanks to essential oils of cassis, rose, palmarosa (otherwise known as Indian geranium).

I haven't had too many experiences with eco-friendly makeup brushes — save, of course, for the EcoTools line of brushes (which are good for the price, but have stiff bristles that can't perform as well as those of a luxury brand like Trish McEvoy, Shu Uemura, or MAC). Thank goodness for Sonia Kashuk, who has just released a superb line of eco-friendly brushes for Target. Each of these brushes features genuine bamboo handles (which are as beautiful as they are sturdy) and a mixture of synthetic fibers and natural hair. My favorite is the Straight From Nature Powder Brush, since it's easy to grip, covers a large surface area, and feels extremely soft against the skin, like a gentle caress.
